Balancing Industry and Sustainability: Overcoming the Challenges of Going Green

All industries across the board are being put under pressure to be more sustainable in today's climate. This transition is especially difficult for businesses throughout Northern Scotland that require very substantial amounts of power to keep their operations running especially those in fairly remote locations. Nonetheless, we know that sustainability is not just about words—it involves striving for responsibility. With this in mind, we focus not only on minimizing environmental impact but also on ensuring economic efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Change Over To Electric Machinery

One of our largest carbon-footprint-reducing initiatives is that we are beginning to incorporate electric machinery in the work that we do. While machines running on diesel may have been the go to for the last hundred years, their environmental impact is considerable. By evolving our fleet with new electric powered machines, we help to tackle this problem - take a Genie Z-45 for example. Traditionally this machine has always ran on diesel, however with their Z-45 DC you are able to complete the same work, with the same type of machine without using diesel.

It's not all smooth sailing, however. The upfront capital costs are large, and its more difficult for us to procure or service electric equipment due to the demand. But we consider this a crucial investment for the benefit of our company's development and also in consideration for the planet.

As manufacturers look to bring newer, more environmentally friendly models to the market, we will continue bring our fleet up to the standard we expect.

Teaching Employees how to Save the Planet

A basic component of our training for all staff is environmental responsibility. Since day one, we are trained to minimise our own impact in the area – guidelines such as wildlife protection, adhering to proper recycling/waste disposal methods as well as strict protocols for chemical spills and other potential hazards that could come from our fleet.

By ingraining this into the training of new and existing staff members, we hope to create sustainable change for the years to come.

Staff and Visitor EV Charging Ports

A key step for us as we moved toward sustainability was installing electric vehicle (EV) charging ports on-site. As more people switch to electric cars, we want to support our staff, visitors, and delivery partners in making greener travel choices, helping Scotland move away from fossil fuel-powered vehicles. By offering free or

low-cost EV charging, we’re making it easier for everyone to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Our charging stations are designed for the perfect user experience, being visible as you enter the yard and compatible with most electric vehicles. This is even in line with our commitment to become a business, future-oriented between human and environment.

Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Industry

Obviously, the path to sustainability is riddled with challenges. The mountainous and rugged terrain in the northern regions of Scotland, combined with some a rather unpredictable weather can make upgrades to infrastructure even more challenging. Moreover, tiptoeing around the line of implementing eco-friendly modifications while adhering to industrial client demands is harder than it sounds. But we also believe being sustainable should not be synonymous with design compromises and lack of performance.

Sustainability is always evolving, and so are we in our quest for smaller carbon footprints — from running energy optimization projects across our sites to examining potential renewable sources moving forward.

We also realize that sustainability is a process (not an event) and we know all the small things done today, will collectively create larger value over time.

A Greener Future

We believe that industry and sustainability can coexist, and this belief fuels the core of our business. We have been investing in electric motorization and are committed to leading the way in EV infrastructure. This helps us not only reduce our environmental impact but also set an example for other companies of our kind in Scotland.

We are excited to continue on this path, meeting the demands of sustainable travel while striving for even more improvements. Let’s work toward a sustainable future for Scotland—one step, one electric machine, and one charging port at a time!
